Annual Safety Day Training

On May 17, 2024 Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Staff participated in our Annual Safety Day Training. We discussed all of the various safety equipment that can be found onboard the R/V Auk and how to properly use this equipment in emergency situations. We conducted an emergency signaling drill, setting off expired smoke flares and handheld flares. This was followed by an abandon boat drill, which involved donning immersion suits, stepping into the water, and then climbing into a life raft. A man overboard drill included tossing a life ring from the back of the boat. We also discussed various roles and responsibilities required during each type of emergency.
